The 169-foot (52m) Nelson’s Column is in the centre of the square, flanked by fountains designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. At the top of the column is a statue of Horatio Nelson, who commanded the British Navy at the Battle of Trafalgar.
Surrounding the square are the National Gallery on the north side.
