Exploring the South West of England
Dorset is a county in South West England on the coast. The county includes Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. The county town is Dorchester. Dorset borders Devon to the west, Somerset to the north-west, Wiltshire to the north-east, and Hampshire to the east.
Over half the county is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Most of its coastline is part of the Jurassic Coast Natural World Heritage Site. It features beautiful natural landscapes such as Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door.
It consists of the seaside resort of Bournemouth, the historic port and borough of Poole, the towns of Christchurch and Ferndown plus many surrounding villages.
It is the birthplace of Thomas Hardy, who used Dorset as the location of his novels, and poet William Barnes, whose work celebrates the ancient Dorset dialect.
