Colchester is a historic market town within the borough of Colchester in the county of Essex, in south eastern England. Colchester is said to be Britain’s oldest recorded town. The town occupies the site of what was the capital of Roman Britain.
Colchester is 50 miles (80 kilometres) northeast of London. It is a popular town for commuters. It is 30 miles (50 km) from London Stansted Airport and 20 miles (30 km) from the passenger ferry port of Harwich. It is located 48 miles from Cambridge.
The town is home to Colchester Castle, Colchester Zoo, and Colchester United Football Club. Dedham Vale to the north of Colchester is known as ‘Constable Country’. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which inspired John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Alfred Munnings.
