A brief history of Battle Abbey
Built by William the Conquerer on orders from the Pope in 1070, as penance for killing so many people in the Battle of Hastings. The Abbey was constructed on the site of the battle, and the high altar marks the spot where King Harold fell in 1066.
William died before the abbey was completed, it was finished in the reign of his son William Rufus around 1094. More work was done in the 13th century, but much of the abbey was later destroyed as a result of Henry VIII's Dissolution of Monastries act.
