Palace House Beaulieu
Explore Palace House, Beaulieu
The Palace House has been home to the Montagu family since it was given as a wedding present by the 5th Duke of Buccleuch in 1867 to Lord Henry Scott - Grandfather to Lord Montagu of Beaulieu.
Palace House was opened to the public in April 1952, and within ten years became one of Britain's most popular visitor destinations. This success was helped by the display of vintage cars that originally were set in the front hall of the house. This collection would later become the National Motor Museum, which opened in 1972.
Step back in time
When you enter the Palace House, you will usually be personally greeted by a fez wearing butler, who is more than happy to guide you through the house, and all staff wear period costume as they would have done when Lord Henry Scott took over the estate.
The home is a fascinating portal into the life of the gentry, and it's large dining room is still being used by the Montagu family, with 30 people sitting for Christmas dinner. The family now reside in private appartments in the house.
A Wartime Secret
One of it's best kept secrets, and one that only has recently emerged is the Secret Army Exhibition. The story of the British and overseas members of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) who completed their secret training at the Beaulieu 'Finishing School' during World War ll.
