1930 Bentley 4½ Litre (Bentley Blower) at Beaulieu - iChauffeur

1930 Bentley 4½ Litre (Bentley Blower)

These "Blower Bentleys" were introduced in 1929. The Amherst-Villiers supercharger gave it incredible amounts of horse-power. They made a fine road car and 27 examples were produced.

1930 Bentley Convertible

The supercharged Bentley 4.5 litre came second in the 1930 French Grand Prix and also the BRDC 500 Mile at Brooklands. It had a top speed of 120mph and produced 240BHP largely thanks to the Amherst-Villiers Supercharger.

Amherst-Villiers Supercharger

Amherst Villiers supercharger

The Amherst Villiers supercharger fitted to the front of this 1930 Bentley. Similar to the turbo fitted to some modern cars. The blower compressed the fuel and air mixture to produce more power. The supercharger was directly powered by the engine, and unlike the turbo which used the exhaust to power it, suffered no lag in power delivery.

Bond's Bentley

Ian Fleming's James Bond actually drove a 1933 Bentley convertible 4.5 litre (in 'battleship grey') with a Amherst Villiers supercharger.
