Glyndebourne Opera House

The Glyndebourne Opera House is a world famous opera venue and home of the Glyndebourne Festival. Situated in the East Sussex town of Lewes.

The opera house is run by Gus Christie, whose grandfather John founded it in 1934, positioning it next to his country home. The Glyndebourne Festival is a unique and celebrated annual summer event that combines fine picnics with the finest in opera performances. This slightly eccentric English event allows time for an extended interval. Just enough time for an evening meal. Many of the audience choose to picnic in the garden. Some dine alfresco on rugs, while others bring tables, candlesticks and ice buckets. Nearly all wear evening dress. If the weather is not particularly summery then Glyndebourne does have an excellent choice of restaurants.

The charm of the occasion does not dilute from the opera performed at Glyndebourne, for over 75 years Glyndebourne has been recognised as a world class operatic institution. Glyndebourne helped launch the careers of some celebrated artists too, including, Kate Royal, Thomas Allen, Edward Gardner, Joan Sutherland, Janet Baker, John Tomlinson, Simon Rattle and John Pritchard.
