Formula 1 British Grand Prix 2008

04/05/06 July 2008

Silverstone, home of the British Grand Prix will see 22 of the world’s best drivers fighting through the sweeping turns of the Northamptonshire Circuit from the 4th to the 6th of July 2008.

Last years wonder rookie, Lewis Hamilton along with the other British Formula 1 drivers, Jenson Button and David Coulthard will guarantee that Silverstone is filled to capacity. Lewis and the McLaren Mercedes team will surely fire up the home crowd as this Great British Event unfolds. Lewis narrowly missed out on collecting the 2007 F1 Driver’s title to Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen, and if last season was anything to go by, will no doubt keep the cool Finn a little bit warm in his Ferrari.

Silverstone has over the years seen some amazing F1 spectacles. The epic battle between Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet in 1987, showed just how passionate the British crowd can be. Mansell said that the people power was worth 5 seconds to him at Silverstone. We hope that Lewis, Jenson and David all benefit from this enthusiasm in the 2008 Formula One Grand Prix.

Rolls-Royce auction

December 3rd 2007, Olympia

Bonhams’ annual motoring auction at Olympia is a must-attend event for any petrol head, and for Rolls-Royce and Bentley collectors in particular it is a very important occasion.

On auction is Rolls-Royce Car no. 20154, a diminutive 10hp two seater is expected to sell for more than 2 million pounds. It is the oldest surviving Rolls-Royce on the planet, made in 1904 and as first exhibited at The Paris Salon in the late Autumn of 1904. Rolls-Royce records confirm delivery from the Manchester Works in November that year. The car was displayed at the Olympia Show in London in February 1905. During the same year it is recorded that a Dr Briggs briefly owned the car – perhaps on trial – and it then passed to Kenneth Gillies of Tain in Scotland. Car no. 20154 was later acquired by Percy Binns of Harrogate, Yorkshire, and in 1950 was discovered in Yorkshire in a forlorn state with modified coachwork. Enthusiast Oliver Langton – a speedway rider of some repute - restored the car meticulously to running condition.

Stewart Skilbeck, Bonhams’ Motoring Specialist says: “This is the first time this car has ever been offered on the open market since 1904 and we expect strong interest from major collectors worldwide.” Car no. 20154 has been in the same UK private ownership for the past 30 years.

Sir Alan Sugar is also putting his 1956 Bentley S1 Continental Sports up for sale. Once owned by another Sir, Sir Elton John who bought the car in 1976, and described it as “the most beautiful-looking car that’s ever been designed”.

Christmas in Trafalgar Square

The lighting of the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square

Thursday, 6th December 2007

Since 1947, the gift of a large tree from the people of Norway to Londoners, has become a Great British Event. Many Londoners start their Christmas celebrations with the lighting of the tree and carol singing in Trafalgar Square.

It will be decorated in traditional Norwegian fashion, with vertical strings of lights. Energy-efficient light bulbs are used.

The tree remains in Trafalgar Square until the 4 January 2008, just before the Twelfth Night of Christmas. The tree will then be taken down for recycling.

Carol Singing in the square

The Christmas tree also provides a central focus for the carol-singing programme which runs each evening from 5pm to 9pm from 10 to 23 December 2007, with the exception of Tuesday 11 December.
