Goodwood Festival of Speed 2007

22nd to 24th June 2007

The theme for this years Goodwood Festival of Speed is ‘Spark of Genius – Breaking Records, Pushing Boundaries’. Celebrating the brave, pioneering motorsport competitors and land speed record breakers. The Festival of Speed will bring together some of the finest historic drivers, along with current F1 and WRC drivers.

Goodwood is going green

The festival will also see the launch of a new Technology Pavilion, which will focus on the future of motoring and environmental issues. Also there will be a environmentally friendly race with some top motor sport stars who will swap their horse power for pedal power, in an exciting bicycle race. F1 drivers, Jenson Button, Mark Webber and Troy Bayliss have already pledged their involvement to be joined by Olympic medal winning cyclists Jason Queally, Chris Hoy and Rob Hayles.

The Earl of March, the founder of the Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival is keen on environmental responsibility and Goodwood is home to Europe’s largest self-sustainable organic farm. The 2007 Festival of Speed promises to be the first major public motor sport event in the UK to have a controlled and clearly labelled recycling waste management process on site, which allows the litter of the 150,000 visitors to be sorted into paper, glass, metal and plastic ready for recycling. It is also planned to use bio-fuels to power the 100+ generators that are used on site during the three days, as well as increasing the fleet of bio-fuel-powered tractors managing the land at the event.

The Goodwood Hillclimb

The main attraction of the Festival of Speed is the hillclimb competition, which takes place throughout the Festival weekend on a 1.16-mile course on parkland roads in the grounds of Goodwood House.

St George’s Day

Monday 23 April 2007

“Cry God for Harry, England and St George”

Henry V inspired his troops at the battle of Agincourt in 1415 AD with the above battle cry. It is said that many of his soldiers were so in awe of his speech that they believed they saw St George fighting alongside them. In that instant, St George became the patron saint of England.

According to the Royal Society of St George, George is believed to have been born in Turkey around 280 AD. He served in the Roman army, but after converting to Christianity, he was imprisoned, tortured, and finally beheaded for his beliefs in Palestine on the 23rd of April 303 AD.

St George and the Dragon

The legend of St George slaying the dragon is famous all over the world. The dragon according to the legend was prowling the shores of a lake in Silene, Libya. The local people offered their animals and then later humans to try a pacify the dragon. Finally in desperation they offered a young princess, Cleolinda to the beast. The valiant St George heard about this and charged the dragon, killing it with a single strike of his lance. He gave the king’s large reward to the poor. Whether you believe in the legend or not, the story represents the cyclic battle between good and evil, and to this day, St George and the dragon is a symbol of good triumphing over evil.
