The Guildhall, Windsor

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Originally designed by Sir Thomas Fitz in 1687, the Guildhall was completed by Sir Christopher Wren. Located in Windsor High Street and only 100 metres from Windsor Castle it was chosen by Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles for their wedding in April 2005. In December, Sir Elton John and David Furnish held their civil partnership in this Berkshire venue.

According to Wikipedia this celebrated building has a small but interesting flaw in its construction: “The story is widely told that the borough Council demanded that Wren should insert additional columns within the covered area, in order to support the weight of the heavy building above; Wren, however, was adamant that these were not necessary. Eventually the council insisted and, in due course, the extra supporting columns were built, but Wren made them slightly short, so that they do not quite touch the ceiling, hence proving his claim that they are not necessary! Whatever the truth of this story, it is undeniable that, to this day, there is a small gap between the columns and the ceiling.”

As a wedding venue, the Council Chamber seats up to 120 and features royal portraits and chandeliers on loan from the Queen. The Ascot Room seats 30.
