The Rolls-Royce Phantom is quite an amazing motor car. Hand-crafted in Goodwood, England. The Phantom is the first Rolls-Royce manufactured by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars under BMW ownership.

Introducing the Phantom

The Phantom is an extremely large motor car. At 5834mm long (or 6084mm if you choose the Extended Wheelbase Model) and 1990 mm wide this a behemoth Rolls-Royce. Thanks to it's aluminium space-frame the car isn't as heavy as it might seem. It is even a tad lighter than a Bentley Continental Flying Spur!

Phantom Power

Powered by a 6749cc V12 with 4 valves per cylinder the Phantom produces a healthy 453 bhp and 720 Nm of torque. It is not designed as a sports car, but it will reach 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and can stretch its legs to 149 mph (governed). Sir Henry Royce might have described it as a bit of "fizz", but the Phantom doesn't even have a rev counter. Instead it has a power reserve meter, which shows the driver how much power is available. Most of the time the car will have at least 90 per cent power available.

Relax, it's a Rolls-Royce

Much discussion and debate has arisen from BMW purchasing the rights to manufacture under the Rolls-Royce name. But as soon as you open the backwards opening rear doors, you realise this is no 7 Series. You are immersed in the finest leather and wood materials to create a cabin space quite unlike any other vehicle on the road. Crafted by hand by some of the world's finest technicians and craftspersons the Phantom interior is a symphony for the senses. More like a traditional gentlemen's club than an automobile. Nice touches are the umbrellas built into the rear doors, right where you need them. Even these brollies would make Mary Poppins jealous. Teflon coated and housed in their fan dried receptacle to keep them dry after a shower. It is these special touches that make this car special. When you start looking closer even the £270 000 price tag seems reasonable.

Hiring a Rolls-Royce Phantom

It is possible to rent a Phantom, but to really get the most of hiring the car, I would suggest reserving a chauffeur driven variety. It is a large car, parking cameras and sensors aside, it is quite a challenge to park if you are not used to it. The other benefit is that you can sit in the back, close your eyes and listen to one of the best audio systems ever fitted to a car. The Logic7 audio system is sublime. Powerful, crisp and detailed, this sound system is excellent for most styles of music. Having said that wafting along with a little Bocelli or Pavarotti blasting is a truly amazing experience. The dynamics of the music system and sub bass harmonics are very impressive.
